Wizards at Cavaliers Preview: Finish the Stop, Keep the Offense Moving
Washington’s Cleveland test starts on the glass. With Justin Champagnie out and AJ Dybantsa questionable, every rotation needs a clear job.

Washington’s next step is easy to name and harder to execute: make a good defensive possession end with the ball.
The Wizards visit Cleveland after a loss in Charlotte that exposed the cost of unfinished stops. The response should show up in the first quarter, in the first substitution pattern and on the first rebound that needs more than one player to secure it.
GAME DETAILS
Washington (2–2) visits Cleveland (2–1) at Rocket Arena on Wednesday, October 28, at 7 p.m. ET. Check the official NBA game page for game information.
1. FINISH THE STOP — WITH FIVE PLAYERS
The official box score from Charlotte shows 20 Hornets offensive rebounds in Monday’s 110–103 win. Washington shot 48.2% from the floor to the Hornets’ 43.3%, but Charlotte took 12 more shots. Making a larger share of your attempts does not help enough when the opponent keeps finding another attempt.
That is the starting point in Cleveland. The first contest matters; so do contact before the rebound, guards finding a body and the next player chasing the loose ball. Davis or Sarr contesting a shot cannot become permission for everybody else to watch it.
Justin Champagnie’s absence makes that responsibility especially relevant. Rebounding has to travel through the lineup rather than depend on one reserve supplying the extra effort. The useful early sign is a clean rebound followed by an organized outlet, not just a dramatic blocked shot.
2. MAKE CLEVELAND DEFEND A SECOND ACTION
Cleveland pairs Donovan Mitchell and James Harden with Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. See the NBA’s Cavaliers season preview for the roster context.
Our read: Washington needs movement after the first option is covered. A ball screen should lead to a decision, not several teammates standing still while the ball handler searches for an answer. Watch the pass out of pressure, the next cut and whether an early advantage becomes a useful catch.
Young had 22 points and 10 assists in Charlotte; Davis finished with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Those numbers showed that the main creators could produce. Tonight’s question is whether Washington can connect that production to the rest of the group and keep a direction when the combinations change.
For Davis, a useful touch is one that gives him a decision before the defense is settled. For the wings, a cut, a quick swing or a drive against a moving defense can be more valuable than taking turns starting from a standstill. A missed open shot and a possession with no clear plan need different reactions.
3. GIVE THE NEXT ROTATION A CLEAR JOB
With Champagnie out and Dybantsa’s availability unresolved, the wing minutes deserve attention. We are not projecting a replacement starter or promising a larger role for a particular player before it is confirmed.
Instead, watch what the next group is asked to do. Who brings the ball into the first action? Who stays available for the outlet? Who takes the rebounding assignment when a big helps? Those are useful questions for Bub Carrington, Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson and the rest of the rotation, whether the jumpers fall or not.
A positive response can be specific: fewer possessions that end in an improvised bailout, better contact on the glass and a group that knows its next responsibility. Four games are too small a sample to settle the team’s identity, but tonight can supply better evidence about its habits.
AVAILABILITY — CHECKED AT 9 A.M. ET
The official NBA injury report lists AJ Dybantsa as questionable with a left ankle sprain. Justin Champagnie is out with a right foot injury, Tristan Vukcevic is out with left hip impingement, and Jamir Watkins is out following left ACL repair/surgery.
Cleveland lists Nae’Qwan Tomlin out with a low back stress reaction. Khalifa Diop and Ernest Udeh Jr. are listed out for G League assignment/two-way reasons.
These are morning participation designations, not confirmed starting lineups. Use the NBA injury-report hub for later changes before tipoff.
